When the 1950s are mentioned, the first type of music to come to most people’s minds is the boom of Rock ‘n Roll, the peak of Jazz, and the revival of American Folk. Even today, baby-boomers and generation X hipsters can reminisce over music that withstood the test of time.
These include:

Frank Sinatra:
Revered for his traditional pop and swing stylings‘, Frank Sinatra is most famous today for classics that he created in the 50’s like “In the Wee Small Hours,” Songs for Swingin’ Lovers,” “Come Fly with Me,” “Only the Lonely” and “Nice ‘n’ Easy”.

Tony Bennett:
Is the only one of two on this list who is alive and well, even dropping a record in 2011. His famous hits from the 50’s still heard today include “Because of you,” “Strangers in Paradise,” and “In the Middle of an Island”.

Elvis Presley:
No introduction is needed for the king of Rock n’ Roll who left us such illustrious classics like “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” and “All Shook Up” are still among the most downloaded songs in America.

Ray Charles:
Ray was all the rage in the R&B scene in the 50’s and some songs like A Fool For You” (No. 1), “This Little Girl of Mine,” “Lonely Avenue,” “Mary Ann,” “Drown in My Own Tears,” and “The Night Time (Is the Right Time)” are still heard all throughout the country.

Johnny Cash:
Though only early into his career, Johnny Cash provided the world with songs like “Cry, Cry, Cry,” “I Walk the Line,” and “Folsom Prison Blues,” that are still playing on the radio today.

Bill Haley:
The real layer of the foundation of Rock n’ Roll, Bill Haley’s, career peaked in the 50’s and in this time he created timeless tunes like “Rock Around the Clock,” and “Knock the Rock”

Who can even imagine of a time when there wasn’t rock and roll. The rock and roll genre has influenced every generation since it was first called rock and roll, and I don’t just mean music wise. It influenced not only music, but also fashion, cars, food, slang terms to name a few. It seems like the term rock and roll has been around since the beginning of time. Actually it was in 1951 (not quite the beginning of time) that a disc jockey by the name of Alan Freed from Cleveland, Ohio, who first used that now well-known phrase rock and roll.

The genesis of rock and roll was somewhat from the blues. When the rhythm of the blues was combined with a strong accent of the offbeat and some lyrics that especially appealed to the younger set, rock and roll was born. Add some loud electric guitars and a whole generation of music lovers was caught. If you were looking for the lyrics to say something profound, you were probably wasting your time. The words were simple and the phrasing was simple, but the music really caught on.

It’s hard to keep a list of who’s who in rock and roll down to a manageable size, so we won’t even try. But we just can’t leave the topic of early rock and roll music without mentioning Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and the Everly Brothers. Who would you add? See, the list goes on and on.

The 1950′s was a critical turning point in the music industry. Many of the big band sounds were being replaced by a new sound of music that was coming from electric guitars. Rock N Roll was now on the scene and had taken the world by storm. Much of the music that is mainstream today was made possible by the artists that opened the doors in the 1950′s. Elvis Presley is still considered a pioneer in the fact that he took music that was typically played in juke joints by black singers and brought it into a white world. There was also a crossover that was taking place by combining traditional country and western music with a rock sound. This was a turning point in the careers of musicians such as Jerry Lee Lewis and Richie Valens. Another interesting thing was happening during this time, teenage girls began developing crushes on the boy next door musicians of this time. The owners of record labels took notice to this and began recruiting the traditional boy next door and turning them into teenage heart throbs. Record sales soared and this practice still continues in todays world. The 1950′s was a great time in music history.

Today’s great singers owe a debt to the singers who came before them, paving the way for new musical and interpretive styles. Among the great innovators of the century, these five singers stand out:

Louis Armstrong

Armstrong’s performing and recording career spanned from the 1920s to the 1970s, and he was one of the first jazz musicians to interpret mainstream music in a jazz format.

Mable Mercer

Remembered primarily by connoisseurs of American popular song, Mable Mercer specialized in songs written by great American composers such as Gershwin and Cole Porter. Singers such as Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra flocked to see her, and Sinatra credited her with teaching him how to phrase a song lyric.

Hank Williams

Every country music singer today acknowledges a debt to Hank Williams, who, in his brief life as a singer/songwriter, encapsulated the earthy sound we associate with classic country music.

Buddy Holly

In his too-brief life, Buddy Holley helped reinvent the sound, as well as the public perception, of rock and roll with his energized, rhythm-driven songs.

Frank Sinatra

As Frank Sinatra’s singing style changed during the 1950s, it became more introspective and highly personalized, influencing a new generation of stage performers.

The quality of the recordings isn’t the high definition audio we are used to. The subject of the music wasn’t as raunchy and suggestive as today’s hits. There also wasn’t state of the art equipment with multiple tracks laid down on top of each other. In fact, many of the recordings were made with just one or two microphones. Music from the 1950’s was very different from today, but also similar enough to set the pace for the future.Want more? Click here{{/tag} Almost every recording artist acquired their inspiration from those before them. The most noted music trendsetters from the 1950’s were:

Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, The Everly Brothers, Bill Haley and the Comets, The Platters, Bo Diddley, Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis. This list covers the biggest names, but still only scratches the surface. All of these artists and groups, plus hundreds of others that there isn’t enough room here to mention, were instrumental in the music industry. Their contributions should never be overlooked and their names should never be forgotten. When you are listening to your favorite artists today, keep in mind that their path was paved in history.
